The landscape of American property insurance is undergoing a fundamental shift. While hurricanes and wildfires often dominate the headlines, a more frequent and persistent threat, severe convective storms, has become a primary driver of rising home insurance rates across the country.

The new normal: billion-dollar disasters

Data from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information shows a sharp acceleration in both the frequency and cost of major weather events.

  • A massive increase in frequency. From 1980 through 2024, the United States averaged roughly 9 billion-dollar disasters per year. In the last five years alone, from 2020 through 2024, that average jumped to 23 events per year.
  • The 2024 surge. In 2024 alone, the country sustained 27 separate billion-dollar disasters, producing an estimated $182.7 billion in total damages.
  • Severe storms leading the pack. Of those 27 major events in 2024, 17 were severe convective storm events involving tornadoes, large hail, and damaging straight-line winds.

What used to be treated as a secondary peril is now a steady, annual source of large insurance losses across a much wider part of the country than hurricanes or wildfires alone.

Severe convective storms are unique because they hit often, hit many states, and create expensive roof, siding, window, and vehicle claims over and over again.

  • Consistent $50 billion-plus losses. Recent years have seen insured losses from severe convective storms regularly exceed the $50 billion mark, a level once associated mainly with the biggest hurricane seasons.
  • Cumulative costs. Since 1980, the United States has sustained 403 billion-dollar weather and climate disasters, with total costs exceeding $2.915 trillion. More than 25% of that total has occurred in just the last five years.

Why this affects your premium

Insurance works by spreading risk across a pool of policyholders. When storm losses rise this sharply, the cost of keeping enough money in that pool rises too.

  1. Increased exposure. There are more high-value homes in storm-prone areas than ever before, so when a major storm hits, there is simply more property in its path.
  2. Higher rebuilding costs. Labor and material inflation mean the same roof replacement that might have cost $10,000 a few years ago could now cost $15,000 or more.

When the baseline cost of storm damage rises, insurance premiums usually follow. That is not a headline problem anymore. It is a neighborhood-by-neighborhood reality.

Severe weather is no longer an occasional concern. It is a recurring annual cost driver, especially for homeowners in storm-prone states.

  • Review replacement cost. Make sure your policy reflects current labor and building material prices in your market.
  • Understand deductibles. Many policies now include separate wind and hail deductibles that can be higher than the base deductible.
  • Consider mitigation. Impact-resistant roofing, stronger garage doors, and other protective upgrades can sometimes reduce damage and may qualify for premium credits.
